Streets in the Sky is a typographic response to the theme of power, exploring Brutalism as a visual language of authority and control. The title references a common description for the elevated walkways found in many brutalist housing estates, designed with the bold intention of recreating utopian, street-level community life above the ground. Intended for Brutalist enthusiasts across Britain. The project is composed of two publications, “Britain Brut” and “Brutalist Calendar 2026”, housed in a black wooden box with two concrete cast slabs as the covers.
The project itself is designed around the three key principles of Brutalist architecture defined by Reyner Banham in “The New Brutalism”: “Memorability of Image”, where the project involves two concrete cast slabs as individual book covers; “Clear Exhibition of Structure”, where each publication is bound with a coptic stitch that has been left raw and exposed; and “Valuation of Materials as Found”, where the materials used throughout the project, from the concrete slabs to the wooden box, have been a significant focal point.
The calendar is designed around a Brutalist-style building in which I have designed for this project, where each floor represents a month, and each room represents a day. The calendar follows an unconventional, linear direction, where, in one week, you must follow the calendar from left to right, and the following week from right to left. This structure highlights the linear state of time and the influence a page has on a person’s reading direction.
